As part of our ongoing Community Spotlight, we are shinning the light on the Key Unlocking Futures The Base on Broadfield, a vibrant community hub in Leyland that are making a real difference.
Marketing Lead, Lewis Webster, alongside our Marketing Intern, Nathan Moore were met with a mountain of donated bags upon their arrival at the community center.

The Base are part of Key Unlocking Futures charity, who have supported over 33,000 people across Leyland and surrounding areas for over 30 years, helping people and families overcome challenges such as homelessness and domestic abuse through tailored support and community projects, like The Base.
Led by the brilliant and charismatic Community Services Manager Andrea Andrews, The Base has become a vital hub for the local community and such a powerful partner in our 0% to landfill mission.
Andrea explained just how fast the donations flood in, by looking at the pile to be collected, it was very clear to see! On this trip alone, The Base impressively diverted over 100 bags from landfill!
Their Mission
All year round, staff and volunteers provide consistent support for the community, whether that’s through their weekly themed programs, variety of large community projects or providing someone to talk to.
Everyone is welcomed – and we really felt that!

This time of the year is very busy for The Base Andrea shared, with some of her personal favourite projects approaching with the festive season too.
From free community pantomimes that Andrea and her daughter direct themselves, to delivering around 540 packages to families at Christmas time, The Base has truly proved to be a fundamental hub for the Leyland community.
Community Roots
Whilst on our visit, we were also fortunate enough to see the flourishing community garden, built from the ground up by community members and vibrantly decorated with help from the areas local children.

The zero-waste garden itself is made of recycled materials, producing a variety of fruits and vegetables, shared with families and local stores. Even what can’t be passed on isn’t wasted, as any unusable produce is taken to a local pig farm, furthering their zero waste goal.
Beyond the environment, the garden is ran by amazing volunteers and has become a real sanctuary for the local community to relax and enjoy nature.
Our Marketing Lead Lewis Webster had this to say:
“It was such a pleasure to meet Andrea and her team. The passion and energy they put into everything they do is admirable while also helping us reduce textile waste. They’re a perfect example of positive community impact”
