From the Classroom to the Warehouse: Dan’s Week at Roberts Recycling

This month, we were delighted to welcome Dan, a Year 10 student from St Hilda’s CE High School, to complete his work experience placement with the team at Roberts Recycling.

Over the course of the week, Dan threw himself into every opportunity – from getting hands-on in the warehouse to supporting office administration tasks and learning how the business operates behind the scenes. His enthusiasm, attitude, and willingness to get involved made a real impression.

To round off his placement, we sat down with Dan to reflect on his experience and hear his thoughts in his own words…

Meet Dan

“Hi, I’m Dan, a Year 10 student at St Hilda’s. Here’s what I got up to this week:”

What have you liked most about your work experience so far?

“I’ve loved getting stuck in – it’s been a proper hands-on experience in the warehouse helping sort clothes. Everyone’s really friendly and treated me like part of the team.”

What projects have you been involved in?

“I’ve helped the warehouse team sort and weigh textiles, helped the vans unload after returning from collections, and worked alongside the Director Paul, where he gave me office admin tasks. It’s been great to see all parts of the business.”

Have you encountered any challenges?

“It’s really fast-paced – there’s always something happening. I’ve enjoyed every day learning something new.”

Final thoughts from Dan

“I didn’t realise how much goes into recycling clothes or how many people and businesses are involved. I’ve learned loads and would like to come back. To top it off with a Thai lunch at the end of the week was brilliant – I don’t get that in school!”

A Message from the Directors

“Dan has been a credit to his school and himself. His curiosity, work ethic, attitude and confidence have really impressed us. We’re always proud to support local young people and give them a real insight into our industry. He’s welcome back anytime!”

– John, Paul and Simon Roberts, Directors, Roberts Recycling

Dan ended his week with a well-earned Thai lunch in the boardroom, reflecting on a packed and insightful few days. We wish him all the best for the rest of Year 10 and hope to see him again soon.
