Residents across Knowsley now have even more opportunities to recycle unwanted clothing and household textiles, following the installation of six new textile recycling banks across the borough.

The new locations build on the successful launch of Knowsley Council’s partnership with Roberts Recycling in November, which saw the first five banks introduced at key community sites.

Since then, local residents have already recycled more than 830kg of textiles, helping to keep valuable materials in use and out of landfill.

The initial rollout included banks at locations such as Archway Road, Huyton Municipal Building, Mill Street Car Park in Prescot and Huyton Hey Car Park. Their strong uptake demonstrated clear demand for accessible textile recycling facilities within the borough.

The latest phase introduces six further banks, making it even easier for residents to recycle clothing, shoes and household textiles responsibly:

All textiles collected through the scheme are transported to Roberts Recycling’s facility in Halebank, Widnes, where items are processed.

Wearable clothing is prepared for reuse through trusted partners, while worn or damaged textiles are recycled into practical products such as insulation materials and industrial cleaning cloths.

Supporting reuse and reducing waste

By expanding the network of textile banks, the partnership aims to make recycling part of everyday life for Knowsley residents. Clothing and textiles that might otherwise be discarded can instead be reused or recycled responsibly, supporting both environmental outcomes and local sustainability goals.

With spring often prompting a clear-out at home, the additional banks provide a timely reminder that textiles of all conditions still have value.

The continued rollout reflects the success of the partnership and the positive response from the local community, helping to keep textiles in circulation for as long as possible.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “The new textile recycling banks have proved to be popular with Knowsley residents already recycling over 830kg worth of textiles since December…

Without the new recycling banks, these clothes had the potential to end up in landfill, but instead they will be repurposed. I’m delighted that we are able to introduce even more textile banks across the borough, because making it easy for our residents to recycle will be a key part in reducing waste across Knowsley.”
