Over 3,000kg of textiles have now been collected from the recycling banks installed at New Mersey Retail Park in Speke, generating vital funds for North West Cancer Research while helping thousands of clothing items stay in use for longer.
Delivered in partnership with Roberts Recycling Ltd, the banks provide local residents with a simple and accessible way to donate unwanted clothing, shoes and household textiles.

from Donations to Impact
The 3,000kg milestone represents approximately 12,000 individual clothing items diverted from landfill.
Instead of going to waste, these textiles are reused, repurposed or responsibly recycled through Roberts Recycling’s established global reuse network. At the same time, every kilogram collected helps raise funds to support life-saving cancer research projects across the North West.
This dual impact model ensures that community donations deliver both environmental and social value:
- Reducing textile waste
- Extending the lifespan of clothing
- Supporting regional cancer research
- Creating an easy, local donation route
A Partnership Making a Difference
The initiative has been warmly welcomed by the team at North West Cancer Research, who highlighted the importance of giving communities practical ways to contribute to meaningful causes.
Carol Kirkham, Head of Fundraising at North West Cancer Research, commented:
“A brilliant partnership that gives our community the opportunity to make such an impact with their donations, thank you.”
Her words reflect the strength of a collaboration that combines environmental responsibility with meaningful fundraising.
By placing the banks at a busy retail destination in Speke, the partnership removes barriers to donation and encourages everyday action. Residents can simply drop off unwanted items while visiting the retail park, knowing their contribution supports both sustainability and pioneering medical research.
John Roberts, Director at Roberts Recycling said:
By working alongside North West Cancer Research and placing accessible recycling banks within the community, we are making it simple for people to do something positive for both the environment and an incredible local cause!”
Building on Early Success
Reaching 3,000kg is an important early milestone, but this is just the beginning. With continued community support, the banks at New Mersey Retail Park have the potential to generate significant long-term funding for cancer research, while preventing many more tonnes of textiles from entering the waste stream.

Residents can donate:
- Clean clothing, paired shoes and clothing accessories such as bags and belts
- Clean household textiles such as towels and bedding
